FAQ and FACTS

FACT; HotSmart Gourmet Plates are the only plates in the world that really  keep food warm and keep selling fast in Amazon.com; we decided to create this page to answer Frequent Asked Questions and feedback from our customers. (Available only in the USA)

It is easy for me to forget as the inventor that what is easy and obvious to me it is not for my customers and  that you deserve better information. The instructions for use are so simple that they are in a single photo on the upper right hand side of the Home Page The plate does get real hot with one single minute preheating in a 1200W microwave oven (Please adjust accordingly if you own a smaller oven)

The SPECS of the plate will show you that this is a quantum leap for the ceramic plate which had not evolved functionally in centuries, however we don't want you to have false expectations; the plates were developed for an specific purpose: to keep food warm at the table so you can enjoy your best recipes; follow the instructions use the plate properly and you will enjoy it for a long time.

HotSmart Gourmet Plates have also being discovered by caregivers and used by people who have to eat slowly due to some physical disability or mobility problem.

Does the base separates from the plate?

No, the seal has been improved; sometimes I have to open a plate for experimenting and I cut the adhesive all around the joint with a very sharp knife which takes me a long time; then I have to pry open the plate with a flat screw driver and that also takes lots of effort. however If you do not follow the instructions you could break the seal; and the plate will not work properly with water inside all you have to do is to preheat the plate a few times until you get rid of all the humidity inside, then continue using the plate and don't put it in the dishwasher anymore. A dishwasher safe version is being developed.

The plate will not become an explosive device (As some malicious comment says); the seal is already broken remember? and you are preheating only one minute. Do not exceed 1 minute preheating time in a 1200W microwave oven; that will be enough. I am always available for questions jjrb230@sbcglobal.net

Some time ago I met a person who put an egg in the microwave to see if it would explode but he also put several layers of shrink wrap over the egg; apparently he blew the door of the oven away; If you are that type of "curious" person or if you decide that you should be able to cook on a HotSmart, you are buying the wrong product.

Are HotSmart Plates Dishwasher-safe?

No, We are working on a dishwasher-safe version with an O ring all around the joint. We are committed to continuous improvement and really appreciate your feed back

Can I preheat the plate in a regular oven?
That would be defeating the purpose of the plate which is designed to get very hot in one single minute in a full size (1200W) microwave oven and remain still hot after 1/2 hour to keep your food warm (I preheat my own plates for 1:15 for steak but I am still in the process of testing, OK?)  Some people say they should be able to preheat for a longer time;  for me it would have been easy to design such a plate but I decided to designed a plate that needs only one minute preheating and remains still hot after 1/2 hour, yet you can handle it safely with your bare hands

Is the plate is too flat?

No, although HotSmarts are not deep plates; see drawing above  they work perfectly for any food with gravy (I use them every day), any comment to the contrary is simply false (This is the type of feedback I do not really appreciate); a waterless bowl is also in the process of development.

 Why is the plate heavier?
The plate has 3 components and needs thermal mass to store the heat; You need to decide if you want a light weight plate or a plate that keeps food warm. A Winchester is better for fighting Apaches than a Colt 45 even if it is heavier; If you don't believe me just watch a John Wayne movie.

The bottom of the plate gets hot?
Yes,  you need to handle the plate by the rim; that is also true for frying pans (You need to take them by the handle)

Does only the center gets very hot?

The whole surface gets hot; handle with care (Hotter at the center); if you like it even hotter you can preheat 1:15 minutes, I do that for steak. If your plate is not getting hot enough, maybe you are using a small (600W) oven in that case you need to increase the preheating time accordingly to two minutes. Most people learn to use the plates in 5 minutes; yes, it is a good idea to maneuver your next morsel to the center (Other people do not like it that hot).

If you are heating up food on the plate you need to increase the preheating time accordingly to the amount of food and its temperature (Do it gradually to avoid overheating).

HotSmart Plates do get very hot and stay still hot after 1/2 hour; by then you should have finished eating.

ThermogramThe center gets very hot (About 200F, see Temp chart below; the red zone is hot

and the green zone -the rim- stays cool for you to handle safely witht he bare hands

Our goal is to make regular ceramic plates obsolete

(We believe it is silly to eat on plates that get our food cold even if they are preheated)

What is the delay action?

It keeps food from overheating or overcooking. HotSmart Plates reach maximum temperature 5-8 minutes after taking them out of the microwave and release heat slowly at a controlled rate to keep food warm. A regular plate -if preheated- will get cold along with the food in about 5 minutes (Just when a HotSmart is at max. temperature).

The plate reaches max. temp. (About 200F) 5 minutes after taking it out of the microwave oven and needs only one minute preheating; if you preheat a normal plate it's difficult to handle and it will get cold -along with the food- in about 5 minutes

Why can't I preheat the plate for 3-5 minutes or more?
For the same reason you cannot leave an iron on a silk shirt for as long as you want; this does not mean the iron or the shirt are defective, simply that every product on the market is designed for a purpose and should be used following the instructions.

Who could be interested in damaging HotSmart's reputation (This is my own question)?

I have been doing a lot of thinking; some feedback looks unfair to me considering that I have always been available and willing to answer any questions. HotSmarts have an A-Z Guarantee from Amazon.com

For the moment I am going to assume that some people who did not use the product properly got frustrated with the results.  I am always available for questions   jjrb230@sbcglobal.net  Juan J. Ramirez - Founder of HotSmart

Please go to the HotSmart Blog to learn a little bit about the inventor and current developments.

HotSmart Plates are here to stay; many people with disabilities need them even though they were developed initially simply as "HotSmart Gourmet Plates" (Simply to enjoy hot food).
